i will be working tonight, but would welcome any guests who want to hang out later in the evening. fyi, my cell phone has changed. should you not have the new number (which no one does actually) please email me and i will send it to you.

peace to you and your coming year.

fruitless endeavors?
while others contend that they simply are having trouble obtaining the text, i will boldly admit that i have made no aggressive attempts to obtain the book for which the substance of our current threads are concerning. i prefer to recieve my knowledge second hand as to cloak my illiterate nature. also i find the distorted version of most texts more exciting than the original well versed versions. besides, how relevant can original text be anyway?

The question
"What do you love when you love your God?"

The beauty of this question is that it doesn't presuppose what God loves. Instead it places the question soley on the believer and her/his perspective.

I simplfy the question as: "what are we really loving?" Are we in love with the God-who-is-there (commonly characterized as: omniscient, omnipresent, wholly other) or are we actually in love with loving the concept of God? Can we label it "wrong" (or "not sufficient") to love loving God? Can we love God if God is wholly other? Am I priviledged to even use the word "we"?

I've been reading Soulwind by Scott Morse-- a wonderful modern parable/faerie tale/myth. I love the moment between the turtle and the boy--

TURTLE: You're way ahead of yourself.
BOY: I am the way.

"What makes me feel God's pleasure?"
I came across this question **via the blogless Phillip** in a Christianity Today article entitled: A Believer's To-Be List. I thought it interestingly similar to Caputo's question, "What do you love when you love your God?". This question was the fodder for much of our conversation this past Monday (12/08). The article to which I link is a list of interesting points. The body of the point that I highlight in the Title of this post:

"Find what Eric Liddell found: something that allows you to feel God's pleasure. When the sprinter's sister worried that his participation in the Olympics might derail his missionary career, Eric responded, "God made me fast. And when I run, I feel his pleasure." What makes me feel God's pleasure? I must identify it, and then run."

Classification of Future
Caputo applies a binary dichotomy to the abstract concept, future: Present Future, and Absolute Future. This is the opening of his discussion on God being associated with the Impossible (page 7 - Kauser should still be OK!). I post this here as my first example of why I love the style Caputo employs in this work. This style of which I speak is one that is assertive and accessible. He presents arguments in the binary (oh no, not only two choices!!!) and successfully avoids the temptation to drive a stake in the ground to mark the location for the cornerstone of the foundation for some massive vertical structure (read Augustine, Kant, et al.).

Joshua signing in ...
Yeah, thanks for setting this up. i've ordered a copy of On Religion from Amazon. It should be in next week.

signing on
Melissa here. Still no book. Barnes and Noble didn't have it in their big store, but I'm still looking for it locally. I figured if I ordered it online, it wouldn't get here in time (seeing as I'm still waiting for books I ordered from one store in November). If I can get a copy from someone, I'd appreciate it. I won't draw dirty pictures in it or anything, except on request. I'll contact Dan though.
